ZIMBABWEAN martial arts icon Shihan Wilfred “Zim Ninja” Mashaya delivered another remarkable performance on the international stage, sweeping four gold medals at the 2026 International Combat Organisation (ICO) Scottish Open Martial Arts Tournament in Glasgow last weekend.
Mashaya gave a flawless performance at the Easterhouse Sports Centre, winning every category he entered and underlining his status as one of Zimbabwe’s most accomplished martial artists.
The multi-award-winning fighter claimed gold in Traditional Weapons, Freestyle Weapons, Creative Weapons, and Musical Weapons, achieving a clean sweep at the high-profile tournament, which attracted competitors from across the United Kingdom.
His latest triumph adds another chapter to an already illustrious international career, during which he has competed and won in various parts of the world while raising Zimbabwe’s flag in martial arts weaponry.
The Glasgow success follows Mashaya and athletes from his Zim Ninja Academy making headlines at the ICO World Championships in Wales in 2025, where the Zimbabwean team won 43 medals, including 14 gold, 18 silver, and 11 bronze.
Mashaya, popularly known as Zim Ninja, has been a trailblazer in the development of martial arts in Zimbabwe and is widely credited with pioneering Ninjutsu and Kobudo in the country.
His journey began in Mufakose, Harare, where he developed an interest in martial arts at a young age before representing Zimbabwe internationally.
His breakthrough on the global stage came in 2016 when he competed in his first international tournament in Russia. Further international exposure helped him refine his skills and gain recognition in weapons-based martial arts.
The martial arts master founded the Zim Ninja Academy in 2018 with the aim of developing young talent and producing future world champions. The academy teaches Karate, Kobudo, Ninjutsu, and self-defence, and it has become an important platform for nurturing athletes of all ages.
Beyond competition, Mashaya has also used martial arts to promote discipline and steer young people away from drug and substance abuse, while supporting self-defence training and broader community empowerment initiatives.
His four-gold-medal haul in Glasgow follows another dominant international performance in 2025, when he won five gold medals at the IMAC English Open Tournament in York, once again demonstrating his mastery across multiple weapons categories.
Having entered four categories and won four gold medals, Mashaya’s latest Scottish Open triumph further cements his reputation as one of Zimbabwe’s most consistent sporting ambassadors on the international stage.
For the man known as Zim Ninja, Glasgow was not just another tournament—it was a masterclass and a powerful reminder that Zimbabwe continues to produce world-class talent in martial arts.
