Harare, (New Ziana)— The Parliament of Zimbabwe has established the Committee for the Future, comprising 14 members, to assist in planning for the long-term future of the country.
Speaker of Parliament Jacob Mudenda announced launched the committee, to be chaired by Deputy President of the Senate Liutenant General (Retired) Mike Nyambuya, in the National Assembly on Wednesday.
Mudenda said the establishment of the committee shows the commitment of Parliament to meet today’s needs while preparing for tomorrow.
He said the committee does not purport to create a fourth responsibility for Parliament and will not encroach into the work of existing committees.
The committee should look 10 to 30 years ahead at issues like artificial intelligence, climate change, green energy, the future of work, space science, and food and water security, he said.
“The committee should prepare the nation against the disruptive emerging technologies like artificial intelligence,” he said.
Mudenda urged the committee to work with universities and the private sector, and to protect indigenous knowledge.
In his acceptance speech, Nyambuya said the committee will not predict the future, but will strengthen the country’s ability to prepare for it but it will review government plans and check new laws to see their long-term impact.
The Committee of the Future was established to anticipate and prepare for emerging challenges and opportunities that will shape Zimbabwe’s social, economic, technological and environmental landscape over the next 10–30 years, ensuring proactive rather than reactive governance.
It will provide strategic foresight and evidence-based policy recommendations to Parliament, the Executive and developmental bodies on long-term priorities that transcend electoral cycles and promote intergenerational justice.
The Committee will also conduct Futures Impact Assessments on major legislation, policies and national strategies to ensure that they are resilient, adaptive and aligned with Zimbabwe’s long-term national interests.
