Harare, (New Ziana) – The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has issued an urgent recall of a specific batch of hypertension medication after it was found to fall short of required quality standards.
According to a public notice released on Thursday, the medication in question is Captopril 25mg tablets, marketed under the name Torrent Captopril.
The product is manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd, an Indian-based pharmaceutical company. The recall affects batch number B520K001.
MCAZ Director General Richard Rukwata urged all stakeholders within the pharmaceutical supply chain—including licensed wholesalers, pharmacies, hospitals, and clinics in both the public and private sectors—to immediately isolate and cease distribution of the affected batch.
He emphasized that the safety and efficacy of medicines are of paramount importance and that the recall is part of efforts to protect public health.
In addition, patients who may have purchased or received the tablets from this particular batch are strongly advised to return the medication to the pharmacy where it was obtained or to report directly to the MCAZ for further guidance.
Although the exact nature of the quality issue was not disclosed in the statement, such recalls typically stem from issues like incorrect dosage, contamination, or failure to meet chemical composition standards.
MCAZ said it will continue to monitor the situation and has assured the public that further updates will be provided as necessary.
