Zim records 227 new Covid-19 cases, 3 deaths

Harare (New Ziana)-Zimbabwe on Wednesday recorded 227 new cases of Covid-19 and 3 deaths as the country witnesses a new wave of the pandemic, which authorities have attributed to complacence by citizens.

In its daily update, the Health Ministry said the country’s 7- day rolling average for new Covid-19 cases also rose to 106 from 87.

“All provinces reported cases today. Mashonaland West reported the highest (101). All 227 are local cases. Deaths reported by Harare (1) and Manicaland (2),” it said.

The latest statistics means Zimbabwe has to date recorded 11 749 Covid-19 cases including 9 702 recoveries and 313 deaths since the onset of the pandemic on March 20.

Of that cumulative number of Covid-19 cases, Harare has the highest number at 3 516 followed by Bulawayo with 3 017, Matabeleland South 1 242 and Midlands 949.

Authorities have blamed complacence by citizens many of whom no longer observing the prescribed safety and preventive measures including wearing face masks, practicing social distancing and washing hands regularly.

The government lifted most restrictive measures as it sought to balance between the health of citizens and the economy which was floundering under lockdown.

Many other countries in the world are experiencing a resurgence of infections with neighboring South Africa recently returning some of the restrictive measures which it had lifted including night time curfews.
