Harare, (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe on Wednesday recorded five new Covid-19 infection cases, taking its tally of confirmed cases to 23, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has said.

This is the biggest jump in new cases the country has recorded in a
single day since the first case was recorded late March.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care said the cases were all recorded
in the country’s second largest city, Bulawayo and were due to local
transmission.

A total of 51 samples were tested on Wednesday, taking the cumulative
tests to date to 716.

“The National Microbiology Reference Laboratory today (Wednesday)tested 28 samples and were all negative for Covid-19,” the Health Ministry said in its daily update.

“Additionally, the National TB Reference Laboratory in Bulawayo tested
23 samples, and five were positive for Covid-19. All five were due to
local transmission.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health said Patient 18, diagnosed on Tuesday,
was a 44-year old Harare man, who arrived from the United Kingdom on
April 13 and presented no symptoms on arrival.

He, however, tested positive a day later.

Zimbabwe has so far recorded three Covid-19 related deaths and one recovery.

The country is currently in the penultimate stages of a 21-day lockdown which was ordered to minimise the spread of the virus.
