Zim records lowest daily Covid-19 infections

Harare,(New Ziana) – Zimbabwe on Wednesday recorded a 2.3 percent daily Covid-19 positivity rate, its lowest since the
start of the year, pointing to the success of strategies being used to contain the pandemic.

January has to date been the deadliest month since the coronavirus outbreak in Zimbabwe in March last year.

While the country has to date recorded 34 865 confirmed cases and 1 364 deaths, 19 464 of the infections and 865 lives were recorded last month alone.

This prompted the government to impose the strictest lockdown regime during the month to try and contain the second wave of the pandemic, believed to include the deadlier South African strain.

While new cases are still being recorded, on Wednesday, the country recorded a positivity rate of 2.3 percent, its lowest to date, down from a peak of about 36 percent mid-last month.

“83 new cases and 11 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours,” the Ministry of Health and Child Care said.

The 11 new cases were recorded out of the 3 561 tests done on the day.

The national recovery rate has as a result also improved to 84.5 percent from 79.2 percent on February 1.

The lockdown, aimed at reducing infections, is set to end on February 15, the day on which Zimbabwe is set to receive its first doses of the Covid-19 vaccine from China.
