Zim registers third Covid-19 fatality

Harare (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe has registered a third Covid-19 fatality, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has said.

In a statement late on Wednesday, it said the deceased was a 50 year old man who had been admitted at Wilkins Hospital in Harare.

He died on Wednesday, and had other health conditions which made him more susceptible to Covid-19.

The man is suspected to have contracted the virus in the United Kingdom where he was last month.

He was admitted to Wilkins Hospital, the main Covid-19 treatment facility in the country, early this month after testing positive for coronavirus.

“The Ministry however would like to report that the ninth patient deceased today under admission in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Wilkins Hospital . He was a 50 year old male resident of Harare, who had travelled to the United Kingdom and returned home on the 21st of March 2020. He started exhibiting mild symptoms and alerted the local COVID-19 Rapid Response team on the 1st of April 2020, which went to assess him at home and collected samples for testing. He was diagnoses of COVID-19 with an underlying comorbidity on the 2nd of April 2020 and initially, was being managed at home. His condition however deteriorated and the local medical team immediately went to stabilise him.

“On the 7th of April 2020, he was admitted for critical care and management in ICU at Wilkins Hospital under the care of specialist Physician. Today, the 8th of April 2020, his condition continued to deteriorate despite management in ICU until he deceased this evening,” said the Ministry of Health.

Zimbabwe has eleven confirmed Covid-19 cases so far, the majority of whom are recovering in hospitals.
