Harare(New Ziana) – Zimbabwe on Friday confirmed two more Covid-19 cases, bringing the country’s tally to five, including one death.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health and Child Care said two of the latest 65 samples it had tested turned out positive for Covid-19, and said it would give more details on these later.

“The Ministry would like to report that today (Friday) the National Microbiology Reference Laboratory tested 65 samples. Two of these tested positive for Covid-19. More details on these to be given later.

“Among the 65 samples tested today (Friday), was the repeat test for the sample from the individual whom we reported previously as having received an inconclusive, result. Today (Friday), he tested negative for Covid-19,” the Ministry said.

“Therefore, to date Zimbabwe has five confirmed cases of Covid-19, including one death,” it added.

It said the third confirmed case, suspected to have contracted the disease after being in contact with the second case, had now been admitted in hospital, and was recovering.

The country registered its first two cases of Covid-19 two weeks ago, and both were contracted outside the country. The second victim, who had other health complications, has since died.

In response, the government has heightened its precautions against the disease, closing borders, educational, sporting and entertainment facilities as well as ordering a partial lockdown.

Specialised treatment centres have also been set up in several cities.
