Harare, (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe on Wednesday recorded 214 new Covid-19 cases as infections continue to spike, with the number of confirmed cases breaching the 2 000 mark, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has said.

The jump was recorded on the day on which the country began observing a dusk to dawn curfew imposed by the government to curb citizens’ movement on the back of a surge in cases of local transmission of the disease.

While at the initial stages, the country recorded more imported cases, the past few weeks have seen the overall total of locally transmitted cases, now at 1 046, overtake those recorded from citizens returning from abroad, which currently stand at 988.

Zimbabwe has in the past week been recording on average 100 new cases on a daily basis.

“Since the onset of the Covid-19 outbreak on March 20 2020, the total number of confirmed cases is 2 034, recovered 510, active cases 1 498
and 26 deaths,” the Ministry of Health.

The total number of tests carried out to date stands at 107 788.

With the rise in cases, government on Wednesday imposed stricter measures allowing only employed people in Central Business Districts
while everyone else is expected to stay at home.
