Harare, July 6, 2021 (New Ziana)-Zimbabwe will hold its fifth population and housing census from April 21 to 30, 2022, the government said on Tuesday.
The country has since independence in 1980 held population censuses every 10 years beginning in 1982.
At the last official count in 2012, the population was estimated at 13.1 million.
In a statement, Finance and Economic Development Minister Prof Mthuli Ncube said it would be the first digital census as computer tablets will be used during the enumeration process.
“Zimbabwe will conduct its fifth population and housing census from 21st to 30th April 2022. The 2022 population and housing census will be the first digital census, in the history of Zimbabwe, and will make use of computer tablets during the enumeration process,” he said.
In preparation for the census, a national census committee chaired by the Finance Minister has been set up.
Zimbabwe requires US$85.5 million to undertake the 2022 national population and housing census.
The census will be carried out by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency with support from the United Nations Population Fund Zimbabwe (UNFPA) and other development partners.
