Harare (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe has already started making preparations to host the biggest gathering of top judicial officials in Africa to be held in October next year, viewed as a key milestone for the country’s justice delivery system.
Zimbabwe won the bid to host the 7th Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of Africa (CJCA) where at least 50 Chief Justices are expected to converge in Victoria Falls for the three-day indaba.
Speaking to journalists after paying a courtesy call on Chief Justice Luke Malaba, visiting secretary general of CJCA, Laraba Moussa expressed confidence that Zimbabwe would successfully host one of the biggest conferences in Africa as preparations were already underway.
“We are here in respect of the preparations for the conference, and we met with the Chief Justice (Luke Malaba). We are comfortable with the preparations which are being done by Zimbabwe and we are confident that the conference will be very successful. The main objective is to ensure that justice is delivered to the people,” he said.
Judicial Service Commission secretary, Walter Chikwanha said the visit by the senior official of CCJA was a boost to preparations for the meeting.
“It brings together over 50 countries, they come together and discuss issues of human rights and constitutional law. This is the biggest gathering of constitutional jurisdictions in Africa which Zimbabwe will host next year in October,” he said.
“So the secretary general is coming to assess our state of preparedness and help us in identifying critical areas that we should attend to so that when the delegates come, we are ready to host them and make sure that their stay in Zimbabwe is as comfortable as possible,” he said.
Chikwanha said JSC was collaborating with various government institutions to make sure that the conference is held successfully.
“What makes this a success is to ensure that there is collaboration between JSC and other government institutions. For instance, we need funding from the treasury which we have been assured of,” he said.
The conference seeks to promote the principles of democracy and human rights.
The CJCA was formed in 2011 in Algeria.
