Harare,, (New Ziana) –Investments by Indian companies in Zimbabwe have been increasing over the years, now standing at an estimated at USD 600 million and having created employment opportunities for around 15 000 people, an official has said.
The two countries on Wednesday celebrated their strong bilateral relations and cooperation in various sectors, including education, defense, and economic development during the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Day held in Harare.
Indian ambassador to Zimbabwe Bramha Kumar highlighted the significance of the ITEC program, which has been a cornerstone of India-Zimbabwe relations since 1985.
“The ITEC program forms an important part of our bilateral relations with Zimbabwe, with 217 slots offered annually,” he said.
Zimbabwe’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Sheillah Chikomo, who was standing in for her Minister Amon Murwira, expressed gratitude for India’s support in human capacity-building and technical assistance.
“This support from India has had a positive impact on Zimbabwe’s global competitiveness through education, scientific and technical cooperation,” she said.
Chikomo also highlighted the importance of the ITEC program in addressing Zimbabwe’s skills gaps, particularly in digital literacy, financial management, and strategic capacity building.
“In addition, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) has offered Zimbabwe 56 fully funded courses for PHD and other post graduate courses in various fields in the last five years.”
The ITEC program has enabled over 5 000 Zimbabwean students to enrol in various Indian colleges and universities, while also providing training opportunities for Zimbabwean military personnel and defence officials.
In addition, India has established 17 Indo-Zim Technology Centres in Zimbabwe, which have been equipped with the latest machines to support Zimbabwe’s industrialization and modernization efforts.
