Harare, (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe has reaffirmed its commitment to enhanced regional cooperation in disaster management following key resolutions passed at an extraordinary meeting of SADC Ministers responsible for disaster risk management.
Speaking during a post-Cabinet media briefing on Tuesday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere said Cabinet had considered and noted the report on the Extraordinary Meeting of the Committee of Ministers Responsible for Disaster Risk Management, which discussed critical steps towards strengthening the region’s disaster response architecture.
“The Meeting deliberated on the full operationalisation of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Humanitarian and Emergency Operations Centre domiciled in the Republic of Mozambique,” he said.
“This Centre coordinates regional disaster risk preparedness, response and support to Member States affected by disasters.”
The meeting, convened under the auspices of SADC, approved the appointment of the first Governing Board of the Humanitarian and Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC).
It also endorsed members of the SADC Emergency Response Team as proposed by the Secretariat, a move expected to significantly bolster the region’s ability to respond swiftly and effectively to a growing range of climate and conflict-related emergencies.
Dr Muswere said the Cabinet welcomed the developments as vital for the region’s resilience.
“Approval of the Members of the Governing Board and the Emergency Response Team will facilitate effective response to the broad range of disasters the region continues to face,” he said.
The HEOC is expected to play a pivotal role in streamlining disaster preparedness strategies, coordinating emergency responses, and mobilising resources in times of crisis across Southern Africa.
