HARARE — Zimbabwe is set for widespread rain and thunderstorms from Tuesday to Thursday, with authorities warning of lightning, strong winds, and isolated heavy downpours across the country.
The Meteorological Services Department, in collaboration with the Civil Protection Unit and other partner agencies, stated that unsettled weather is expected from September 29 to October 1, 2026.
The forecast indicates that all areas of the country could receive rainfall, with some localised areas expected to record more than 30 millimeters.
The public has been urged to exercise caution, as thunderstorms may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds, and heavy rainfall could result in flash flooding in low-lying areas.
Communities have been specifically warned against attempting to cross flooded rivers and streams, as rapidly rising water levels can pose a danger to life.
People caught in thunderstorms have also been advised to seek shelter in safe buildings and avoid exposure to lightning.
Authorities further cautioned members of the public against sailing during stormy conditions due to strong winds and unstable weather.
Meanwhile, farmers have been urged to take note of the potential impact of the rains on crops approaching grain filling and maturity.
According to the advisory, rainfall during this stage could affect grain quality by increasing moisture levels and creating conditions favourable for fungal diseases.
The authorities urged communities to remain alert throughout the forecast period and to follow weather updates and guidance issued by the Meteorological Services Department and Civil Protection officials.
The latest advisory comes as communities prepare for the onset of the 2026/27 rainfall season, with farmers closely monitoring weather conditions for agricultural activities.
Residents have been encouraged to take necessary precautions before the storms begin, especially in areas prone to flooding and lightning-related incidents.
