Zimbabweans from all walks of life are celebrating Sungura music icon Alick Macheso as he marks his 58th birthday today, June 10, 2026, in recognition of a remarkable career that has spanned more than three decades and transformed the country’s music landscape.

Born in 1968 in Shamva, Mashonaland Central Province, Macheso has grown from humble beginnings to become one of Zimbabwe’s most influential and enduring musicians. Affectionately known by fans as “Baba Shero” and “Extrabasso,” the singer, songwriter and bassist remains a dominant force in the Sungura genre through his celebrated band, Orchestra Mberikwazvo.

Among those leading the birthday tributes was his daughter, Stacy Macheso, who expressed pride in her father’s achievements and impact on Zimbabwean music.

Macheso’s musical journey began at a young age when he developed an interest in playing string instruments under the guidance of family members. His passion for music eventually took him to Harare, where he sharpened his skills in several bands before establishing Orchestra Mberikwazvo and launching a highly successful solo career.
