Harare, (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe is set to host a high-level delegation of Permanent Representatives to the United Nations (UN) on a week-long familiarization tour starting on Thursday, an official has said.
In a statement, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade spokesperson Philisiwe Chidawanyika said the visit forms part of the country’s ongoing campaign for the 2027–2028 Security Council seat, as it seeks to strengthen diplomatic support ahead of elections scheduled for June 3 this year, in New York.
“The tour will provide the UN Permanent Representatives with an appreciation of Zimbabwe as a peaceful and stable country and its contribution to international peace and security,” Chidawanyika said.
The delegation will comprise representatives from across the UN’s five regional groups, including Africa, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Asia and the Pacific, as well as Latin America and the Caribbean.
Countries represented include the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Austria, Portugal as well as Trinidad and Tobago.
Chidawanyika said the visit is strategically designed to enhance Zimbabwe’s global standing while showcasing its economic and cultural potential.
“The tour will enhance the country’s visibility and image, promote Zimbabwe as a premier tourism destination, showcase its potential in international trade and investment, and demonstrate Zimbabwe’s doctrine of ‘A Friend to All and Enemy to None,” she said.
During their stay, the envoys are expected to engage with senior government officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Amon Murwira, before paying a courtesy call on President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The program also includes visits to key national institutions and heritage sites that reflect Zimbabwe’s role in promoting peace and preserving cultural identity.
These include the National Heroes Acre, the Zimbabwe National Defence University, and the Southern African Development Community Regional Peacekeeping Training Centre, all of which highlight the country’s contribution to international peacekeeping efforts.
The delegation will also tour iconic sites such as the Great Zimbabwe Monument and Victoria Falls, as well as the Tongogara Refugee Settlement, underscoring Zimbabwe’s commitment to refugee protection, while a visit to Green Fuels is expected to showcase the country’s strides in sustainable energy and economic development.
Zimbabwe’s candidature for the Security Council seat has already received strong backing from regional bodies, including SADC, the African Union, positioning the country as a leading contender ahead of the upcoming vote.
The familiarization tour is seen as a critical diplomatic engagement aimed at consolidating that support, while offering first-hand insight into Zimbabwe’s governance, stability and development trajectory.
