Zimbabwe hosts African women leaders

Harare, (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe is set to take center stage in shaping the future of women leadership in Africa as it hosts the prestigious 7th Inter-generational Retreat (IGR) of the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) from 6–7 September 2025 at the International Convention Centre in Harare.

The landmark gathering will be officially opened by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, marking a moment of continental significance for women’s empowerment, innovation, and inclusive development.

Announcing the development at a press conference on Thursday, Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Monica Mutsvangwa described the event as a momentous occasion that places Zimbabwe at the heart of Africa’s transformation agenda.

The retreat will be graced by around 300 high-level delegates drawn from across Africa and the global community.

These include AWLN Elders and Pioneers, the Global Chapter, the Young Women’s Caucus, chapter members from across the continent, government officials, parliamentarians, civil society, private sector leaders, youth organisations, and representatives of organisations for persons with disabilities.

The African Women Leaders Network, a flagship initiative of the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN), is dedicated to advancing women’s leadership in line with Agenda 2063 and the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Since its inception, AWLN has championed women’s participation in policy and decision-making, building solidarity across generations and strengthening capacity through peer learning and advocacy.

In 2019, the AWLN introduced the concept of the Inter-generational Retreat to foster dialogue between established women leaders and young women change-makers.

Six successful editions have since been convened, and Zimbabwe now proudly takes up the mantle to host the 7th Retreat under the theme: “Accelerating the Preparedness of African Women Leaders to Harness Emerging Technologies for Africa’s Development.”

Minister Mutsvangwa emphasised that the chosen theme is both relevant and timely as Africa navigates the complexities of the digital age.

She stressed the importance of ensuring that women and girls are not left behind in the rapidly evolving technological landscape, highlighting the transformative role of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence in achieving inclusive and sustainable growth.

“By embracing digital innovations, women leaders will not only enhance Africa’s global competitiveness but also ensure development that leaves no one behind,” she said.

The retreat will also serve as a platform for Zimbabwe to showcase its own milestones in advancing women’s leadership.

This includes constitutional amendments and policy reforms aimed at promoting inclusivity, equal rights, and expanded opportunities for women in leadership and decision-making spheres.

A highlight of the event will be the recognition of President Mnangagwa as an AWLN Positive Masculinity Champion.

The accolade honours his commitment to gender equality, the elimination of gender-based violence, and the promotion of women’s empowerment—placing Zimbabwe as a continental leader in inclusive governance.

“As the host country, Zimbabwe is eager and fully prepared to warmly welcome our fellow African women leaders,” said Minister Mutsvangwa. “Together, let us accelerate Africa’s transformation by harnessing the potential of emerging technologies and ensuring that women and youth are at the centre of our continent’s development.”
