Harare, (New Ziana – The Zimbabwe government on Wednesday launched Project Ignite, a ground-breaking initiative aimed at equipping women and youth with the skills and tools necessary to participate meaningfully in the growing digital economy.
The launch marked a significant milestone in efforts to bridge the gender-digital divide and promote inclusive development in the country.
Speaking at the launch, permanent secretary for the Ministry of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Beaullah Chirume, emphasized the importance of digital inclusion, saying the core objective of Project Ignite is to dismantle existing barriers that prevent full participation in the digital realm.
She said the gender-digital divide is an ongoing obstacle to inclusive growth, with women and girls experiencing limited access to tools, lower levels of digital literacy and fewer opportunities in the technology sector.
“We must fully leverage the potential of digital technologies to empower every citizen, with a particular focus on women and youths.”
Project Ignite will make significant strides in enhancing digital literacy, fostering entrepreneurship, and establishing innovation hubs throughout the country.
“These centres will serve as dynamic springboards, empowering young individuals to develop and implement their solutions and start-ups that address pressing needs within our communities,” said Chirume.
As Zimbabwe embarks on the new journey, Project Ignite is poised to promote inclusive development and bridge the gender-digital divide, ultimately contributing to the vision of the country to attain upper middle income status by 2030.
