Zimbabwe is intensifying preparations to host the COMESA Heads of State and Government Summit scheduled for October, with government officials saying groundwork for the regional gathering is progressing steadily.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Amon Murwira said preparations for the summit were now at an advanced stage, with authorities assessing infrastructure that will be used during the event.

“We will be hosting the COMESA Summit in a few months, and we are preparing for the event. When the time comes for us to take over the COMESA leadership as a nation, we will promote regional and African unity.

“Zimbabwe will benefit from new developments, including the Intra-African Trade Free Company headquarters in Harare and the upcoming completion of the Harare Afreximbank Africa Trade Centre. We are in the process of identifying and checking the infrastructure that will be used for the event,” he said.

Zimbabwe is currently serving as Vice Chair of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa and is expected to assume the chairmanship from 2026 to 2027.

The leadership transition follows the 24th COMESA Summit held in Nairobi in October 2025, where Kenya took over the chairmanship from Burundi, while Zimbabwe assumed the vice chairmanship.

Zimbabwe plans to utilise the infrastructure upgraded for the 2024 SADC Summit to host the COMESA gathering.
