Harare, (New Ziana) -The Zimbabwean economy has shown significant expansion with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) revised upwards to ZWL168.5 trillion, or US$44.4 billion, a sharp increase from the previous estimate of ZWL133.7 trillion (US$35.2 billion), the latest Economic Census has shown.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere said this on Tuesday while addressing the media after the Cabinet meeting.

He said the census, which covered 2023 but was carried out throughout 2024 and into the first quarter of 2025, has for the first time in years captured the full breadth of the country’s expanding economic landscape.

Muswere said the upward revision reflects improved data coverage and inclusion of thousands of new business entities that emerged post-2019, the previous census base year, with the broader scope meaning that more of Zimbabwe’s informal and small-to-medium-sized enterprises have been factored into national accounts.

“This growth is not just statistical, it reflects the increasing dynamism of Zimbabwe’s economic sectors,” he said.

He said the revised GDP has also translated into higher Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, which rose from US$2 259 in 2023 to US$2 859, a clear sign of rising national earnings.

Projections for last year have been revised up from US$2 228 to US$2 893, and the government now expects per capita income to exceed US$3 000 this year.

The trajectory puts Zimbabwe firmly on track toward achieving its ambition of attaining Upper Middle-Income status, a key national target under Vision 2030, said Muswere, adding the revised figures are expected to boost investor confidence and better inform future fiscal and economic planning.

It also highlights the need for more regular and comprehensive economic surveys to keep pace with fast-changing realities on the ground, he explained.

ZIMSTAT is expected to release further disaggregated data in the coming months, providing deeper insights into sectoral contributions and regional economic performance.
