ZRP refutes claims it blocked MDC-T meeting

Harare, (New Ziana) – Police have strongly denied reports they blocked a meeting of the MDC-T party, and said instead that officers were called in to restore order after violence broke out among the party’s own members.

News reports on Friday claimed police in Harare had blocked a meeting of MDC-T members at the party’s Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House headquarters, where over 400 people had gathered to discuss leadership restructuring.

In response to the reports, ZRP national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the media claims misrepresented the facts and misled the public on the events that transpired.

“Reference is made to a story published in a local daily newspaper on 18th July 2025, titled,”Police block MDC-T meeting”. The Zimbabwe Republic Police sets the record straight on the facts surrounding the purported meeting.

Contrary to the newspaper’s claims, the Zimbabwe Republic Police did not block the meeting. Instead, the Police was called to intervene and maintain law and order after violence had erupted among the feuding members during the gathering,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

He said any insinuation by the media that the police blocked the meeting is incorrect and misrepresents the correct circumstances on the ground.

He appealed to the media to report objectively and accurately, ensuring that the public is informed of the correct facts as they unfold.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police categorically states that it did not block the MDC-T meeting. Officers were only called in after violence erupted during the gathering, as tensions flared between feuding factions within the party,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

He said police presence at the meeting was solely to maintain law and order and prevent the situation from escalating further.

“As the media plays a critical role in informing the nation, we urge reporters and editors to ensure that facts are thoroughly verified before publication. Sensationalism should not come at the cost of truth,” he said.
