Harare, (New Ziana) – The Zvishavane Regional Magistrates’ Court has jailed a 34-year-old man for an effective 32 years after convicting him on two counts of rape involving his 11-year-old daughter, a case that has deeply shocked the local community.
In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said the horrific abuse came to light after the minor confided in her mother about the abuse, leading to the arrest and prosecution of the father, whose name has been withheld to protect the identity of the victim.
The first assault occurred on January 1, this year, when the girl was at home with her younger siblings under the care of her father while her mother was away.
The accused called his daughter into his bedroom, forced her onto the bed, undressed and raped her.
The terrified child cried in pain, but the man covered her mouth to silence her. After the assault, he threatened to kill her or her mother if she ever spoke out.
The abuse did not stop there and on April 2, after violently assaulting his wife—forcing her to flee the home—the accused again summoned his daughter to his bedroom.
This time, he sent her younger sister away before sexually violating her once more, repeating his death threats to ensure her silence.
The traumatized girl later disclosed the abuse to her mother, who immediately reported the matter to the police.
A medical examination confirmed the assaults, leading to the man’s arrest.
In delivering the sentence, the magistrate emphasized the gravity of the offence, noting the breach of trust, the vulnerability of the child, and the psychological trauma inflicted.
The 32-year prison term sends a strong message against sexual violence, particularly in cases involving minors, noted the magistrate.
The victim and her mother are receiving counselling and support as they rebuild their lives. Authorities have urged communities to speak out against sexual abuse, and report such crimes to protect vulnerable children.
