    19k vaccinated against Covid-19

    Harare, (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe recorded a consecutive day on Sunday without a Covid-19 death as the number of frontline workers vaccinated against the virus hit 19 000, the Ministry of Health and Child Care said.

    The Covid-19 vaccination programme was launched 10 days ago after the country received iits first batch of 200 000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine from China.

    As of Sunday, the country had recorded 1 463 deaths and 36 089 cases since March last year, having gone the last two days without recording a Covid-19 fatality.

    The country, which recorded its peak of coronavirus deaths in January, had last recorded zero Covid-19 fatalities on December 26, 2020.

    “As of February 27, 2021 at 15:00 hrs, there were 135 hospitalised cases, of which asymptomatic were 70, mild to moderate 52, severe four and nine in intensive care units,” the health ministry said in its daily update.

    Zimbabwe, which is expecting to take delivery of more Covid-19 vaccines, expects to achieve herd immunity after vaccination of at least 10 million people by the end of the year.

    The country has been under a Level 4 lockdown for nearly two months as government sort to curtail spread of the highly contagious disease.

    President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to announce new measures when the current lockdown restrictions lapse on Monday.
