POLICE have raised concern drowning and are encouraging parents to safeguard their
children from playing near open water bodies to avoid drowning during this rainy
    season.
The advisory follows the drowning of two children in separate incidents in
    Mashonaland Central Province recently.
The first incident happened on January 6, 2023 when Rennis Makuwerere (16)
drowned after accidentally slipping into a river in the company of his brother,
Takudzwa Makuwerere, while fishing in Angwa River.
Takudzwa tried to rescue Rennis but failed.
The following day at around 1pm, Veronica Mhandu left her grandson, Wesley
Muzingwa, whose age was not given, playing alone while she was undertaking
cooking duties at Mapfunga Village, under Chief Negomo, in Chiweshe.
At around 3pm she started looking for her grandson but to no avail.
However, on January 8, 2023 at around 2pm his aunt, Priscilla Mudzimba – sister to
his mother – saw him floating in an unprotected well 50 metres away from their
    homestead.
Police provincial spokesperson, Inspector Milton Mundembe, said:
We urge members of the public to stay away from unprotected deep waters and to
    safeguard their children.
