An elderly Buhera couple is lucky to be alive after two unknown machete-
wielding assailants pounced on their home, viciously attacked them, and got away with over
US$ 800 belonging to a local burial society group.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Nobert Muzondo said Danai Maparara
(72), and his wife, Shorai Mapara (65) of Dakoni village, Chief Chimutsa, Buhera were
raided and assaulted by the robbers in the early hours of Thursday.
“As Maparara and his wife Shorai Maparara (65) were sleeping, they heard a knock on the
door to which Danai responded to. Upon opening the door, Danai was met by two unknown
males, one armed with a machete and the other with a wooden stick,” he said.
Sensing danger, Maparara immediately tried to hide a cash box containing funds from
contributions from members of the burial society, but the robbers demanded the money.
He surrendered the cash box only after the robbers beat him severely on the face and ribs
with slaps and sticks.
Maparara is now recovering at Murambinda Mission hospital, with his condition said to be
stable.
Police said the robbers had made away with US$870 and R3 500 from the family, and a
manhunt had since been launched to track the suspects.
Meanwhile, Muzondo said a Mutare man was also recently robbed of cash and a cellphone at
knife point after a taking a lift home from the city center.
Owen Zvinofadzabvumi (24), was robbed by four unidentified robbers driving a white Nissan
caravan, registration number ACR 1625.
“On March 4, around 1900 hours, Zvinofadzabvumi hiked a lift with four occupants from
Choppies on his way home in Dangamvura. Upon reaching Moffat hall, the driver stopped
the vehicle and the passenger next to him produced a knife demanding valuables from him,
said Muzondo.
Zvinofadzabvumi surrendered US$100 and a Samsung A10, all valued at US$420 before he
was kicked out of the vehicle.
The suspects are still at large.
Police are appealing to the public for information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects.
