Gwanda (New Ziana) – The start of voting in ZANU PF’s primary elections in Gwanda was delayed for an hour due to logistical reasons, and only opened at 8.30AM on Saturday.
The party is conducting internal elections countrywide to select candidates to represent it in local government and parliamentary polls later in the year.
Saturday’s elections were scheduled to open at 7AM, and close at 4PM, but logistical challenges delayed the start of voting in Gwanda.
Hundreds of party members thronged Gwanda High School, one of the voting centres in the area, before 7AM to cast their ballots.
Gwanda district co-ordinating committee chairperson, David Linda, said voting was going on smoothly after the logistical hiccups, which delayed the start of voting, were solved.
In the Gwanda-Tshiaudze constituency, formerly Gwanda central, four candidates are battling it out for the right to represent the party as candidate for House of Assembly.
Elections are taking place in 12 constituencies in Matabeleland South province, one less after the region lost one constituency in the recent electoral delimitation exercise.
For local government, primary elections are being held in nine out of ten Wards in Gwanda, with sitting party councillor for Ward 9, Thulani Moyo, spared.
