Bulawayo (New Ziana) – A top Government official in Bulawayo said on Monday all was set for independence celebrations in the city, to be held at White City stadium.
Last year, the city successfully hosted the national commemorations at Barbourfields for the first time. This year Mount Darwin is hosting the national celebrations.
The rotational hosting of national independence celebrations follows government decision to have these devolved to regional parts of the country.
Running under the theme, “Zim@43 Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo/Ilizwe Lakhiwa Ngabanikhazi Balo”, this year’s celebrations comes against the backdrop of one of the best agricultural seasons, and successful completion of several infrastructure projects.
In an interview with New Ziana, Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution permanent secretary, Paul Nyoni said all systems had been put are in place for Uhuru celebration on Tuesday.
“All is set for Independence celebrations to be held at White City stadium. We have Minister`s Ball tonight (Monday) where we are expecting 300 participants from business, government, artists and residents,” he said.
Nyoni said a number of artists will perform at Monday’s showcase, which is being used to fundraise for the less privileged.
“The event tonight (Monday) will be used to fundraise for charity as more artists will be expected to showcase,” he said.
Nyoni said Tuesday’s Uhuru celebrations will start at 8am, characterised by two processions of drum majorettes and brass band heading towards White City stadium.
Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Judith Ncube will preside over celebrations, including delivering the presidential speech.
“The minister will then deliver President Mnangagwa keynote address and thereafter there will be a soccer match featuring first division teams Arsenal and Indlovuiyanyathela(ZNA). Lunch will be served to everyone who will attend the celebrations,” he said.
The 2023 independence celebrations come at a time the Second Republic has aggressively pushed implementation of major capital projects, which is transforming the lives of ordinary people.
In the southern region, major projects underway include construction of Gwayi Shangani and its pipeline to Bulawayo, the US$1,5 billion Hwange Power station expansion project, Lupane provincial hospital, Cowdry Park clinic, transformation of Binga district, and resuscitation of irrigation to boost food security to mention but a few.
