Harare (New Ziana) –Close to 6 000 people have been arrested since the police launched an operation code named “No to dangerous drugs and illicit substances” about three month ago.
This follows the arrest of 27 people on April 30, which brought the total number of people arrested for possessing various forms of drugs to 5 865, the Zimbabwe Republic Police said in a twitter thread on Tuesday.
The latest arrests include that of Godsave Ndou (37) and Tapelo Ndlovu (39) at River Ranch in Beitbridge along the Limpopo River by security details deployed to combat cross-border crime.
The two men were found in possession of 5.2 kg of dagga.
In Tsholotsho, Matabeleland North province, the police arrested Zanele Fuluma, (30) after finding her in possession of 106 satchets of dagga at a house in the Ngqoya area on the same day.
Substances that are commonly used in Zimbabwe include alcohol, dagga, heroin, glue, cough mixtures such as Histalix and Broncleer, and crystal meth.
Prevalence of drug abuse among the country’s youth is estimated at 57 percent with many of those currently admitted in mental health institutions suffering from substance induced disorders.
Meanwhile the police also announced the arrest of 141 people under an operation to suppress illegal meat vending, bringing the cumulative arrests to 3 428 since the operation began.
