Harare (New Ziana)-Police in Bulawayo have arrested a duo for allegedly swindling 46 people of over US$134 000 after promising to assist them in securing employment overseas, the police have said.
Sitshengisiwe Ndlovu (46) and Alison Unami (30) allegedly committed the scam between August 2022 and May 3 this year.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the suspects allegedly duped the complainants US$134 552.00 after posing as agents of an undisclosed company involved in facilitating job placements in Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland.
“On 03rd May 2023, Police in Bulawayo arrested Alison Unami (30) after a report had been made by one of the complainants. The suspect was arrested while loading property in a vehicle, preparing to vacate from their known offices. The other suspect, Sitshengisiwe Ndlovu (46) was later arrested at Bulawayo Police Station, where she had visited her husband,” he said.
Police investigations established that the suspects would tell the complainants that processing of the purported overseas jobs would be done within three weeks after payment of US$4 000, and interviews would be conducted through the WhatsApp messaging platform.
When the waiting period lapsed, the suspects would give the complainants excuses and as a result, 46 victims fell for the scam and were defrauded of approximately USD134 552.00.
“We continue to implore members of the public to exercise due diligence before making any payments to individuals and employment agencies purporting to facilitate job placements abroad,” said Nyathi.
