Harare (New Ziana) -The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested a fraud and cyber-crime suspect following a tip-off from the public.

In a statement, the ZRP confirmed the arrest of Trynos Muzanenhamo (25) in Chiendambuya, Headlands in Manicaland province after a high-speed chase where the suspect was driving a Toyota Hilux GD6 as a get-away vehicle.

Muzanhenhamo is alleged to have duped individuals and companies over ZWL28 million and USD1 800.

“Investigations by the police established that the suspect, who was once employed by a mobile phone provider, sent a One Time Password code to unsuspecting members of the public for confirmation, thereby enabling him to hack and gain access to the unsuspecting persons’ bank accounts.

“The hacked accounts were used to receive fraudulently obtained funds from various sources. The suspect would hack WhatsApp accounts, use foreign accounts and identity documents to create fraudulent accounts which he used to defraud individuals and companies,” read part of the statement.

The police appealed for information which may lead to the arrest of the suspects’ accomplices Trevor Muzanenhamo, Bradwell Shangwa and Timothy Bvuramiti to report to the nearest police.

It also urged members of the public who could have been defrauded through phone hacking, WhatsApp hacking and identity theft to report at the Criminal Investigation Crimes Division or any nearest police station.
