Nyazura (New Ziana) – Hundreds of thousands of ruling ZANU-PF supporters were gathering at Handina Secondary School in Makoni South, Manicaland province on Wednesday for an election campaign rally scheduled to be addressed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa and other top party officials.
The country goes to the polls next week to elect a new president, parliamentary and local government representatives to run state affairs for the next five years.
President Mnangagwa is vying for a second term, and is widely considered a front runner in a race in which ten other presidential candidates are also contesting.
Wednesday’s Makoni South rally is one of a series President Mnangagwa has addressed countrywide, attended by huge crowds, to drum up electoral support ahead of the August 23 vote.
Aspiring ZANU-PF Makoni South constituency legislator, Albert Nyakuedzwa said around 200 000 party supporters from in and around the area, and the province were expected to attend the rally.
He said the constituency, as was the case throughout the country, had benefited enormously from various government development programmes over the last five years, and would vote overwhelmingly for the ruling party.
Since assuming office in 2017, President Mnangagwa has prioritised economic and social development programmes, including at community level, which has seen the lives of millions – particularly in rural areas – positively transformed.
“Irrigation schemes are being developed in Ward 17 covering an area of 80 hectares, in Ward 31 there is a 365 hectare scheme as well fully furnished with all equipment and centre pivots,” Nyakuedzwa said.
In addition to agricultural developments, he said similar investment in health and education had been made by the government in the constituency and district, impacting the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.
