MARONDERA- As a show of confidence in their abilities to serve the nation in various
Government portfolios, President Mnangagwa recently re-appointed Mashonaland East
cadres who were part of the previous Cabinet.
The 26-member Cabinet which was appointed by the Head of State and Government is
expected to drive the country’s development through the National Development Strategy 1
(NDS-1) blueprint targets to meet Zimbabwe’s aspirations to attain an upper middle-income
society seven years from now.
The Second Republic launched the NDS-1 in 2018 and the five-year economic growth
programme is on course to drive Zimbabwe towards the attainment of Vision 2030.
National priority programmes in NDS-1 include structural transformation, human capital
development, environmental protection, housing delivery, economic growth and stability,
food security and nutrition, governance, moving the economy up the value chain, climate
resilience and natural resources management.
There were new members from Mashonaland East province who were added into the
Cabinet whose government will serve for the next five years.
Ministers from Mashonaland East who retained their posts are Zanu PF provincial chairman
Daniel Garwe (National Housing and Social Amenities), Felix Mhona (Transport and
Infrastructure Development) while a new post, the Ministry of Youth Empowerment,
Development and Vocational Training, was created for Tino Machakaire who was the deputy
Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation headed by Kirsty Coventry.
Chikomba West legislator Tatenda Mavetera was handed the Information Communication
Technology portfolio in the Cabinet, taking over from Jenfan Muswere who is now the
Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services.
Mhona, the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development, said he will continue to roll
out the infrastructure development projects and programmes that his Ministry has been
carrying out over the years.
“In the previous Cabinet, I was overseeing the same Ministry and I am now well-versed with
how to pull the strings. I am grateful to President Mnangagwa for appointing me again and
this field is not new to me. I will make sure that we accelerate the projects that we started as
well as come up with innovative ways to rehabilitate our roads as well as gravitate towards
the contemporary issues to do with road management and also learn from best practices of
other countries,” said Mhona.
For Information Communication Technology Minister Tatenda Mavetera, a former actress
who will always be remembering for being the brains behind the Young Women for
Economic Development initiative said she is ready to work hard in order to make sure that
ICTs reach out to very corner of the country.
She said: “In line with President Mnangagwa’s mantra of leaving no place and no one behind
when it comes to national development, I will make sure that ICT reaches out to every
person and every part of our country. His Excellency has been very clear about having an
all-encompassing approach in national issues and development.
“We have to embrace ICT as a nation and we want to put in place measures that ensures
that we reach out to the rural population. I am grateful to President Mnangagwa for the
appointment and I am excited about the job.”
Apart from Mavetera, other new Ministers in the Cabinet are Lovemore Matuke (Provincial
Affairs in the Office of the President and Cabinet), Torerai Moyo (Primary and Secondary
Education), Barbara Rwodzi, (Tourism and Hospitality Industry) and Edgar Moyo (Energy
and Power Development).
