GWERU — In line with the National Development Strategy (NDS 1) cluster of food security, the
Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) established a bakery at the Whawha Prison
Complex that will add value on wheat produced at its farms by making quality bread and
    confectionaries for inmates.

In time the new bakery will be supplying bread and confectioneries in Chiwundura communities and
    surrounding areas.

Speaking at the official commissioning of Confartex Bakery at Whawha Prison Complex last Saturday,
ZPCS Commissioner General Moses Chihobvu said the bakery was established to ensure food
    security for the inmates.

All Officers Commanding Provinces were ordered to establish bakeries to value add on wheat
produced at their farms by making quality bread and confectionaries for inmates.

ZPCS has embarked on an enhanced commercial farming drive at its farms where it is growing a
variety of farm produce including wheat which is a critical component of a balanced diet.

“The move will not only ensure a balanced diet for our inmates, but will go a long way towards
imparting the necessary life changing skills to our inmates in line with our rehabilitation drive,” said
    Comm. Gen. Chihobvu.

“Whawha Prison Complex and the greater Chiwundura communities will now get fresh bread at their
doorsteps. I therefore, implore every one of you to support Confartex Bakery for posterity, and very
soon it would be able to supply the neighbouring communities, hence benefitting the supply chain
    industry.”

He urged the corporate world to explore business opportunities at ZPCS for possible engagement
through Public-Private Partnership in line with the Devolution Agenda.

Comm. Gen. Chihobvu said: “We need to unite and harness the available resources in our localities
    to grow our economy.

ZPCS is responsible for incarceration, rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders as it plays its
Constitutional role in the Zimbabwe Criminal Justice System.
