Harare, (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested Bulawayo City Council deputy mayor, Edwin Ndlovu, and another councillor on allegations of demanding a bribe from a company that wanted to invest in the city.

In a statement, the anti-corruption watch dog said that the duo is expected to appear in court on Saturday in Bulawayo.

“ZACC has arrested Bulawayo City Council Deputy Mayor Edwin Ndlovu and Councilor Mpumelelo Moyo on a bribery charge. Ndlovu and Moyo allegedly demanded US$20 000.00 from Labenmon Investments as payment for facilitating approval for land to set up a cement mixing plant,” said ZACC.

Circumstances are that, sometime in November last year, Tsitsi Mapfumo from Labenmon Investments made an application to council, without success, for the acquisition of 10 hectares of land to set up a cement mixing plant.

The company later resubmitted the application in April this year before being offered 5.6 hectares of land.

After receiving the offer letter, the suspects allegedly approached Mapfumo demanding a reward of US$20 000 cash on behalf of the other 20 Bulawayo City Council for facilitating the approval.

A report was then made to ZACC, leading to Ndlovu and Moyo’s arrest on corruption charges.

They are due to appear at the Tredgold magistrates court.
