MUTARE – A 32-year-old man from Gaza E in Chipinge has been sentenced to 11 months in prison for physically abusing his mother, following a domestic violence incident that took place last November 27.

The case was brought before the Chipinge Magistrates Court.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the accused returned home that evening demanding food from his mother. Frustrated that supper was not yet ready, he reacted violently.

“The mother had not yet finished preparing supper and that did not go well with the accused who broke windows and threw his mother’s cellphone to the ground. The mother managed to escape and sought refuge at her brother’s place,” stated the NPA.

The situation escalated to the point where the mother felt threatened and sought refuge at her brother’s house to escape the abuse.

In light of the circumstances, the court sentenced the accused to 11 months in prison, with two months suspended on the condition of good behaviour. Additionally, one month of the sentence was suspended on the condition that he performs 210 hours of community service.
