Harare, (New Ziana) – In a groundbreaking initiative meant to modernize agriculture in Zimbabwe, the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development on Saturday distributed 880 state-of-the-art 5G tablets to agricultural extension officers and supervisors from Matabeleland North and South Provinces to enhance the delivery of their services to farmers.

The initiative is part of a nationwide strategy aimed at revolutionizing agricultural production, enhancing efficiency and productivity in the sector. Professor Obert Jiri, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, led the distribution, and emphasized the importance of integrating technology in farming operations.

“Today marks a significant leap forward for our agricultural sector. These tablets will empower our extension officers with real-time data, enabling them to provide timely and relevant advice to farmers. It’s not just about technology; it’s about transforming lives and livelihoods,” he said.

The tablets, equipped with advanced farming applications, will facilitate improved communication, data collection, and access to agricultural research, among other things.

This digital advancement, Jiri said, aims to address the challenges faced by farmers, including climate change adaptation and market access.

He added that by leveraging modern technology, not only would this boost productivity but also ensure sustainable agricultural practices that benefit both the farmers and the environment.

The distribution event was well-received by local officials and agricultural stakeholders, who expressed optimism about the potential impact of the initiative.
