MUTARE – Job Sikhala, an opposition politician and leader of the National Democratic Working Group, was arrested last weekend in Mutare along with several of his associates.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests, stating that Sikhala and 20 others were charged under Section 7(1)(b) of the Maintenance of Public Order Act for holding a public gathering without notifying the police. “The law requires that any public meetings be communicated to the authorities in advance to ensure public safety,” Nyathi explained.

Following their arrest, Sikhala and the majority of his group were released later in the evening. However, Chief National Organiser Joelson Mugari was held overnight and charged with convening an unsanctioned meeting. Mugari was subsequently released on US$300 bail.

Sikhala, known for being outspoken was released from prison last year after spending nearly 600 days behind bars on charges related to inciting violence.

Following his release, Sikhala has continued to advocate for political reforms and accountability, making him a target for government scrutiny.
