MUTARE-The Buhera community is in deep mourning following the sudden and tragic death of Acting Chief Makumbe, Takudzwa Paul Chengeta, who passed away at the age of 30 in a road accident on the Harare-Mutare highway.

The young traditional leader died last Tuesday when his Toyota Hilux GD6 collided head-on with a Gold Class bus near Marondera, approximately 86 km from Harare.

Chengeta, a final-year Civil Engineering student at the University of Zimbabwe, was travelling to Mutare from Harare with a friend at the time of the accident. His friend sustained minor injuries and was rushed to Marondera Hospital for treatment, while Chengeta’s body was transferred to the hospital’s mortuary.

The late Acting Chief Makumbe was the eldest son of the late Chief Makumbe, Shepherd Chengeta, who passed away in March 2023. He was appointed to the role of Acting Chief Makumbe in 2024, stepping into his father’s footsteps to serve the Buhera community. His untimely death has left a void in the community, where he was widely respected for his dedication and leadership.

Tapiwa Chengeta, the late chief’s uncle, confirmed the tragic news and stated that the family is awaiting traditional protocols and leadership guidance before announcing the official burial date.

“We are still making arrangements, but it is likely that he will be buried at his rural home in Buhera,” he said.

The accident has sent shockwaves through Buhera and beyond, with many expressing their grief and condolences. Chengeta, who was unmarried, was not only a promising leader but also a bright academic on the verge of completing his studies. His dual commitment to education and traditional leadership had earned him admiration from both his peers and the community.
