Harare, (New Ziana) – Rehabilitation works on the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road have gathered momentum, with contractors making significant progress as Government accelerates its national infrastructure modernisation programme.
In a statement, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development said an assessment team led by Permanent Secretary Joy Makumbe toured ongoing works beginning at the Intabazinduna Toll Plaza, before moving to the Fossil Contracting section.
The team, the Ministry said, witnessed “tremendous progress,” with 6.3 kilometres of newly rehabilitated roadway set to be opened to traffic next week whilst an additional 8.8 kilometres have been fully prepared for priming.
“From Intabazinduna Toll Plaza the team went straight to assess the progress on the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road Rehabilitation Project starting with the Fossil Contracting section. Tremendous work was witnessed with 6.3 km set to open to traffic next week while an additional 8.8 km is now ready for priming,” it said.
Progress was also noted at the Syvern section, where 5 kilometres of rehabilitated highway have already been opened to traffic, while another 9 kilometres are now ready for cement stabilisation with completion of this phase targeted for August next year.
Makumbe stressed the need for strict adherence to engineering standards to guarantee durability, safety and quality, adding that maintaining such discipline was crucial as Zimbabwe pushes towards achieving an upper-middle-income economy.
As the inspection team proceeded towards Hwange, they diverted to assess progress on the Lupane–Nkayi–Kwekwe Road Rehabilitation Project, a major undertaking aimed at enhancing connectivity between Matabeleland North and the Midlands.
Project managers briefed officials on the scope of the 240km project, whose current priority is the first 160km, divided into eight sections.
Officials said the steady pace across all sections on the highway and others reflects Government’s firm commitment to modernising national infrastructure, improving regional mobility and stimulating economic activity—key pillars in the country’s development trajectory.
