Brazilian football icon Ronaldinho is set to make a surprise return to competitive football at the age of 46 after reportedly agreeing to turn out for Italian Serie C side Ravenna FC.
The former Barcelona and AC Milan star has been away from professional football for more than a decade, with his last competitive appearance coming in 2015 during his stint with Brazilian outfit Fluminense.
Ronaldinho’s proposed comeback has generated widespread interest, particularly given his age and lengthy absence from professional competition.
Ravenna owner Ignazio Cipriani has reportedly confirmed that the former Brazil international will feature in at least one Serie C match, putting to rest speculation that his involvement with the club would be limited to an ambassadorial or promotional role.
However, the date of his anticipated return has not yet been announced, with Ronaldinho not expected to feature when Ravenna open their new campaign against Reggiana.
The move also marks a return to Italian football for the 2002 World Cup winner, who previously played for AC Milan between 2008 and 2011.
Apart from his playing role, Ronaldinho has joined Ravenna’s ownership group as the club seeks to rebuild its fortunes, attract investment and raise its international profile.
His involvement is expected to bring considerable attention to the Italian side, with the club hoping to capitalise on the Brazilian’s global popularity to attract supporters and potential investors.
Ronaldinho, renowned for his creativity, flair and entertaining style of play, expressed his excitement at the prospect of returning to the pitch.
“I cannot wait to dance with the ball,” he said.
The Brazilian’s return, if completed as announced, would represent one of the most unusual comebacks in recent football history, with the 46-year-old preparing to lace up his boots for a competitive appearance 11 years after his last professional match.
