Chief Charumbira Highlights Role of Traditional Courts in Promoting Community Justice

Deputy President of the Chiefs Council and President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), Chief Fortune Charumbira, has underscored the importance of traditional courts in promoting justice and social harmony within communities.
Speaking recently at the official opening of the 2026 legal year at the Masvingo High Court, Chief Charumbira said traditional courts play a vital role because they are easily accessible, affordable, and trusted by ordinary citizens. He noted that, unlike higher courts, traditional courts handle a large volume of cases efficiently and rarely experience backlogs.
“Traditional courts are convenient and closer to the people. They dispose of more cases than other courts, and most disputes are resolved within two weeks or less,” he said.
Chief Charumbira also condemned Gender-Based Violence (GBV), urging traditional leaders to use their courts to protect the rights and dignity of women and children.
“We must use our cultural institutions to fight against violence and promote respect in families and communities,” he emphasised.
He added that traditional leadership structures remain central to maintaining peace, justice, and social cohesion across Zimbabwe, complementing the country’s formal judicial system
