ZPCS condemns violence, attempted escapes

THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) has condemned all acts of violence, attempted escapes, and any attempt to undermine its security operations.
The ZPCS made this statement following the arrest of inmate Itai Madhongo, who briefly escaped from the Harare Magistrates Court holding cell after violently attacking a ZPCS officer.
Madhongo was apprehended hiding under sewer drain pipes at the Harare Magistrates Court, following a swift and coordinated response by the ZPCS SWAT team, canine section, and other correctional officers on duty.
“We remain resolute in our mandate to uphold public safety. Such acts not only threaten the safety of individuals but also undermine the integrity and professionalism of our institution,” ZPCS said in a statement.
“We wish to reassure the nation that ZPCS is committed to maintaining a secure and disciplined environment within our facilities and during all operational activities.”
The ZPCS stated it will continue to enforce discipline and uphold the rule of law to ensure that justice prevails.
“We extend our gratitude to all officers involved in the swift response and successful apprehension. We remain committed to safeguarding the integrity of our operations and to the safety of all Zimbabweans,” said the security organisation.
Madhongo, who is serving a 38-year custodial sentence for unlawful entry, rape, and armed robbery, was at court facing a separate rape charge.
While in the court cell, Madhongo allegedly assaulted a ZPCS officer who entered to escort him to court, inflicting injuries to the officer’s face and neck with a sharp object. The officer was rushed to hospital for treatment and is in stable condition.
In an attempt to facilitate his escape, the inmate undressed the officer and put on his uniform, hoping to deceive security personnel and flee.
ZPCS said a full internal investigation is underway to examine the circumstances of the incident.
