Support Community Radio Growth-Muswere

The Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere, has officially launched Lyeja FM, a community radio station in Hwange, calling for greater support for grassroots broadcasting as part of the government’s drive to enhance information dissemination and community development.

The launch, held during Minister Muswere’s tour of high-impact projects in Hwange, marked a major milestone in improving access to information in Matabeleland North Province.

The Minister emphasised that government remains committed to promoting community radio stations like Lyeja FM, which play a vital role in giving local communities a voice and advancing national cohesion.

Dr Muswere said community radio continues to be a key communication tool, particularly in rural and mining communities where access to mainstream media may be limited.

He cited the stations’ crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic in broadcasting educational messages and public health information, often in collaboration with traditional leaders and community structures.

“The Government will continue supporting community radio stations as a means to ensure citizens are informed at the national and district level,” Dr Muswere said.

“Through these stations, communities can share local stories, promote development initiatives, and participate actively in the country’s journey towards Vision 2030.”

The Minister also urged local mining companies and other corporates to partner with community radio stations and invest in development-oriented projects such as road rehabilitation and infrastructure upgrades.

Also speaking at the event, Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Richard Moyo, appealed to the Hwange business community, including the Hwange Colliery Company, to support Lyeja FM operationally.

He noted that the presenters currently run the station on a voluntary basis and called for incentives to motivate and sustain their work.

“Lyeja FM is the voice of Hwange. It deserves the backing of every stakeholder, especially local companies, to keep it vibrant,” Moyo said.

The launch ceremony was attended by local leaders, including Chief Hwange, the District Development Coordinator, government officials, and Zanu PF Central Committee members.

Dr Muswere encouraged the station to showcase the district’s unique character through programmes that highlight local wildlife, the Hwange National Park, and the area’s cultural and economic landscape.

Lyeja FM becomes one of several community stations recently licensed as part of Zimbabwe’s media reform agenda aimed at widening access to information and enhancing citizen participation in development
