CHIREDZI — A 26-year-old man allegedly struck his 76-year-old father in the head with an axe after being refused US$1 to buy a packet of cigarettes last week.
Masvingo provincial acting police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Masauso Patinyu, said Alford Chirume of Village 2, Mkwasine, Chiredzi, had a misunderstanding with his father, Dennis Chirume, over US$1 he wanted for cigarettes.
“On February 6, around 12 pm, Alford demanded US$1 from his father Dennis, who told him he had no money at the time. Alford was not happy with the response, as he knew Dennis had just received money from a sesame harvest. A misunderstanding ensued, leading Alford to chase his father demanding money,” said Asst Insp Patinyu.
Dennis is alleged to have pulled out his catapult and struck Alford once in the mouth. In retaliation, Alford picked up an axe and struck his father once on the head and once on the left hand.
He said Dennis was able to escape and was later rescued by his neighbours.
Alford returned home and set two huts on fire.
Police attended the scene and arrested Alford, while Dennis was taken to Chiredzi General Hospital, where he was treated and discharged. He sustained deep cuts to his head and left hand.
Asst Insp Patinyu has urged members of the public to resolve their matters amicably and resort to dialogue rather than violence.
