Maphisa, (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa arrived at Maphisa Stadium in Matobo District on Wednesday morning to headline the country’s 46th Independence Day celebrations being marked under the theme “Zimbabwe at 46: Unity and Development Towards Vision 2030.”

He was accompanied by Vice Presidents Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi, as well as First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa.

Upon arrival, President Mnangagwa inspected a ceremonial parade mounted by the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA), Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS), Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ), and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), showcasing the country’s disciplined forces.

In a symbolic highlight, he lit the Independence Flame after receiving it from renowned cricketer, Richard Ngarava.

The newly constructed 10,000-seater Maphisa Stadium is filled to capacity, with thousands more spectators gathered outside following proceedings, reflecting strong public interest.

Despite heavy morning rains, the weather failed to dampen the enthusiasm of locals, many of whom described the event as historic for Matobo District.

This year’s hosting of the independence celebrations in Matabeleland South Province underscores a deliberate government policy to rotate major national events across provinces, to promote inclusivity, equitable development, and national visibility for previously marginalised areas.
