The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has commended football fans, clubs and stakeholders for their continued support of the local game following the successful Harare Derby between Dynamos FC and CAPS United FC at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday.

In a statement on Monday, the PSL said more than 25,000 paying fans attended the highly anticipated clash, creating what the league described as an “incredible atmosphere” that showcased the passion and unity of Zimbabwean football supporters. The league thanked clubs, partners and stakeholders who worked closely with the PSL to ensure the smooth organisation of the matchday experience.
“We would like to express our sincere appreciation to football fans across the country for the passionate support they have shown to their respective teams since the start of the season,” read part of the statement signed by PSL Communications and Media Liaison Officer, Kudzai Bare.

The PSL, however, urged supporters to refrain from acts of misconduct such as missile throwing, warning that such behaviour damages the image of the game and places financial strain on clubs.

Meanwhile, Acting Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Paul Mavima praised the atmosphere witnessed at Rufaro Stadium during the derby.
Minister Mavima said the encounter demonstrated the power of sport in uniting communities and inspiring young people.
“Today, I had the honour of standing in as the Acting Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture at Rufaro Stadium where I witnessed an exciting football encounter involving CAPS United and Dynamos FC,” he said.

“The vibrant atmosphere and unity displayed by supporters once again highlighted the important role sport plays in bringing communities together, empowering young people and promoting national pride.”

He added that Government remains committed to supporting the growth and development of sport in Zimbabwe in line with Vision 2030.

The Harare Derby is regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s biggest football fixtures and once again drew thousands of supporters from across the country, reaffirming the enduring popularity of local football.
