Former national team defender and now interim coach of the Zimbabwe senior men’s national football team, the Warriors, Kaitano Tembo, has named his squad for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament set for June 26 to 30 in London, England.
The four-nation tournament will feature Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Jamaica and India in what promises to be a thrilling international football showcase as the Warriors continue preparations for future continental and international assignments. The squad also sees the return of international players who had been sidelined by former coach Mario Marinica
Tembo’s appointment as acting coach adds another layer of interest to the tournament, with many local football supporters eager to see how the former Warriors captain handles the opportunity on the international stage. The former SuperSport United mentor brings vast experience both as a player and coach, having enjoyed a successful career in South African football.
The squad reflects a blend of experienced internationals, exciting young talent and locally based players, signalling a desire to field a competitive team capable of making a strong statement in London.
In the goalkeeping department, experienced South Africa-based Elvis Chipezeze headlines the selection alongside Brentford goalkeeper Marley Tavaziva and ZPC Kariba shot stopper Future Sibanda.
The defensive unit combines physicality, pace and versatility, with Munashe Garananga, the recalled Jordan Zemura, Divine Lunga, Gerald Takwara and Emmanuel Jalai expected to play key roles. England-based Corbin Mthunzi, Sean Fusire and Shane Maroodza also strengthen the backline.
Zimbabwe’s midfield carries a strong mix of leadership and creativity.
Marvelous Nakamba will provide composure and experience, while returning Marshall Munetsi adds energy and attacking drive from midfield. Germany-based Jonah Fabisch, Scotland-born Abuabacar Moffat and talented youngster Tawanda Chirewa are also expected to inject creativity into the team, while Highlanders midfielder Mongameli Tshuma’s inclusion highlights continued recognition of standout performers in the domestic Premiership.
The Warriors’ attack looks equally promising, with Tino Kadewere leading a forward line that includes Prince Dube, Bill Antonio, Daniel Msendami, Junior Zindoga and red-hotTawanda Maswanhise of Motherwell. Football analysts believe the Unity Cup presents an important opportunity for Tembo and his technical team to assess combinations, build squad chemistry and expose players to competitive international football ahead of more demanding assignments.
Nigeria are expected to provide the toughest opposition at the tournament given their status as one of Africa’s football powerhouses, while Jamaica’s physical style and India’s rapidly improving football structure are also expected to test the Warriors. The tournament is also likely to attract huge support from Zimbabweans living in the United Kingdom, with many expected to rally behind the Warriors during the London showcase.
Fans have already expressed excitement over both the squad selection and Tembo’s temporary appointment, with hopes high that the Warriors can produce strong performances and continue rebuilding confidence in Zimbabwean football.
For many supporters, the Unity Cup is more than just a friendly tournament — it is another opportunity for Zimbabwe to demonstrate progress, restore pride and strengthen its standing within international football.
