HARARE – Legendary Zimbabwean musician Thomas Mapfumo has confirmed that he will return to perform in Zimbabwe, with a reported US$1 million package for two high-profile shows expected to become one of the biggest deals in the history of the country’s music industry.
Mapfumo, popularly known as “Mukanya”, confirmed his participation, with only the finalisation of paperwork remaining before the agreement is officially sealed.
The two performances, scheduled for the second half of 2026, are linked to functions involving businessman Wicknell Chivhayo and musician Jah Prayzah.
If completed, the deal will see Mapfumo emerge as the highest-paid musician in Zimbabwe, eclipsing the fees traditionally associated with leading local entertainers.
Ordinarily, musicians within Zimbabwe’s top tier — including artistes such as Alick Macheso, Winky D and Jah Prayzah — charge performance fees ranging between US$3 500 and US$7 000 per show, depending on the nature and scale of the event.
The reported US$1 million package for two appearances represents a significant shift in the valuation of Zimbabwean musical talent, particularly for artistes with decades of influence and a global following.
Mapfumo’s return has generated excitement among fans who view him as one of the founding figures of Chimurenga music and a cultural icon whose music has shaped Zimbabwe’s artistic landscape.
Having spent years based abroad, the veteran musician has continued to command respect among audiences in Zimbabwe and across the diaspora through his timeless catalogue and powerful lyrical messages.
