Bulawayo, (New Ziana)- The Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers (CZR) on Monday assured the public that retail and wholesale businesses nationwide will operate normally on July 31, a day opposition groups and activists plan nationwide strikes, ostensibly to protest against the recent amendment of the constitution.
The constitution was amended with overwhelming support in parliament, with a key provision being the scraping of a direct presidential vote, in favour of the election of the head of state by legislators.
CZR president Denford Mutashu said supermarkets, wholesalers, pharmacies, service stations and other retail outlets would remain open for business, emphasizing that there was no reason for disruption to normal commercial activities.
“We wish to assure the nation that all retail and wholesale businesses across Zimbabwe will remain open and conduct business as usual on July 31.
“We encourage members of the public to continue patronizing their usual shopping centres, supermarkets, wholesalers, pharmacies, service stations and other retail outlets with confidence as they go about their normal day-to-day activities,” said Mutashu.
He said the retail and wholesale sector remained one of the country’s key economic drivers, supplying essential goods and services while supporting employment, industrial production and overall economic growth.
“The retail and wholesale sector remains a critical pillar of country’s economy, providing essential goods and services to millions of consumers while supporting employment, industrial growth and national development.
“The prevailing peace, security and macroeconomic stability continue to provide the foundation upon which businesses can operate, invest and serve consumers with confidence,” Mutashu said.
He said the confederation recognised government’s efforts to promote macroeconomic stability, which had helped create a more predictable operating environment for businesses.
“We acknowledge the significant strides made in promoting economic stability under the Second Republic. This has continued to inspire confidence among businesses and investors while creating opportunities for growth across the retail and wholesale sector,” he said.
Mutashu also commended law enforcement agencies for maintaining peace and order, saying a secure environment was essential for commerce to thrive.
He appealed to retailers, wholesalers, suppliers, employees and consumers to uphold peace and avoid actions that could disrupt business operations or negatively affect the economy.
