Bulawayo (New Ziana) -The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has warned motorists against driving vehicles with registration plates obscured by bull bars or bumpers, saying offenders will face the full force of the law .
In a statement on Tuesday, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said law enforcement agents had noted an increase in vehicles travelling on public roads without registration plates, while others had their number plates concealed by fitted accessories, making identification difficult.
“It is an offence for any motorist to drive a vehicle which does not display registration plates (number plates) on the country’s roads. In terms of the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act (Chapter 13:14) and the Road Traffic Act (Chapter 13:11), all vehicles moving on the roads should be fitted with registration plates in order to assist in the maintenance of law and order in the country,” he said.
Comm Nyathi said police had also observed a worrying trend of motorists fitting bull bars and bumpers that partially or completely blocked vehicle registration plates.
“This makes the identification of these vehicles difficult in case of criminal acts and road traffic accidents,” he said, adding police will take action on such vehicles and ensure that the country’s laws take effect without fear or favour.
He implored motorists to comply with the law by ensuring their vehicles display clearly visible registration plates at all times.
“Vehicle owners and drivers are implored to be law-abiding citizens and assist police in promoting road safety and curbing crime in the country,” he said.
